Lessons in education 2.0

I share this because I can. If you've got kids, you may decide you should, too.

Is education really so out of touch with the needs of the people it serves? It's hard for me to say with certainty. It feels like it is - but it's a long time since I was in the classroom!

Kids brought up as part of constantly connected communities, for whom interaction and mmprg are second nature, for whom participation and the need to shape, share and mash-up are ingrained... the church pews of education seem so wrong. The listen-while-I-speak model so out of date.

This is another thought-provoking video by Michael Wesch at Kansas State.

It's about much more than education, isn't it?

First spied on Confused of Calcutta.

  1. Is it MMORPG? (Massively Multiplayer Online Rolepaying Game)?

If so, I think European kids aren't necessarily MMORPG addicts. But I do think they have increasing interaction via the likes of Habbo Hotel and Cyworld. More social networking than MMORPG, but a first step on the road to dressing like an elf! Obviously Bebo, Myspace and Facebook are also enabling socialising to an ever great extent, but don't overlook instant messaging either...For someone who doesn't want to spend their entire allowance on their mobile, MSN/AOL/Yahoo Messenger is pretty handy...

  2. mmprg - massively multi-player role games. You say potatoes...

The point isn't how much kids in one location or another are or aren't socially connecting in one way or another, the point is that there expectations and norms and very different from those they are forced (and often fail) to squeeze into by educational establishments.

I thought the video made the point quite well?

  3. Apologies for that too-rapidly-typed example of bad spelling... should be "their expectations and norms are very different..."
