Any colour you like as long as it's BBC

The BBC's new homepage has clearly come out of Beta. Now anyone visiting gets the igoogle-type experience. Except of course, you only get to choose from bits of BBC content to put on 'your' homepage.
Maybe it is possible to be half pregnant after all? Got to hope so for the BBC's sake.
Next-generation baby by the end of the year?

  1. I know...its like building the first ever car and only being able to use it on an entirely circular road with no routes off to anywhere else.

This misses point 2 and 3 of the Rules of Engagement (http://www.jonathanmacdonald.com/?p=181) as it has been assumed that total relevance and incentive can be found from one publisher.

You can imagine the meeting: "guys, its all about letting people choose what they want" - interpreted to mean "its all about letting people choose what BBC content they want"

After-all, its not about distribution its about DESTINATION right?

Er...no. Not anymore Auntie. With all due respect, not by a long chalk.

  2. Absolutely Jon. I can't see the Beeb's position being sustainable, even as a trusted source of news, unless they open up and let the network in.
Why trust Beeb content? Cos it has the logo on? Not really enough for those creating their own networks of trust is it?
Funny, they seem happy enough to allow their content out... part of the broadcast, centre-out mindset I guess?

The rate of change is so rapid it's difficult for one person to keep up to speed. Let's pool our thoughts, share our reactions and, who knows, even reach some shared conclusions worth arriving at?
