Visiting Microsoft Research in Cambridge today

I'm getting through the doors at Microsoft Research in Cambridge this afternoon. I've no idea how much of what we get to see and talk about I'll be allowed to share, but whatever the case I daresay we'll have some interesting conversations and an exchange of ideas that can only add value all round.
I took a quick look at their site this morning.
Among the focus on 'being human' and nature's inspiration for the machine I noticed something that didn't seem particularly organic.
Under 'Careers at Microsoft Research' there are just two buttons: 'Interns' and 'Post Docs'.
In the context of 'blue sky thinking' that just struck me as a little odd...

  1. Nah - it's quite right Dave. After all, the real innovation will come from PHD students. Its best to ignore what end-users think and what consumers feel. After all, if you dind't get into college, what right have you got to shape the future, let alone think 'blue-sky'

    Right?

    ...........just kiddin :)

  2. You're confusing cause and effect. Innovation of the type and level that they're engaged in will earn you a PhD.

Microsoft has plenty of other people to worry about consumers' feelings when they lay a pretty GUI over the algorithms that Microsoft Research produces. That's the easy bit, or at least it's a different kind of hard.

Microsoft Research is an academic research lab; it's next to the University's Computer Laboratory for a reason. Since you'll be supervising PhD students, having a PhD yourself is somewhat useful.

The rate of change is so rapid it's difficult for one person to keep up to speed. Let's pool our thoughts, share our reactions and, who knows, even reach some shared conclusions worth arriving at?
